Community rules
TentOwl is a map of places to pitch a tent for the night. Everything you add is checked by a moderator first. These rules explain what we publish and why we may decline. If a place or a photo was declined, the reason is shown in "My places"; here is what it means.
What to add
- Places where you can pitch a tent and spend the night: wild spots, clearings, shores, campsites, roadside spots fit for a night.
- Put the pin where the tents stand, not at the trailhead or the car park — unless they are the same.
- In the description, write what helps the next person: how to get there, how many tents fit, whether and where there is water, what has changed. Write about the place, not about people.
- Photos of the place itself: where to pitch, the access, the water. Your own photos only.
What we don't publish — reasons for declining
Places
- This place is already on the map. There is already such a place nearby. Report on it that you were there instead — that makes it more reliable.
- You can't pitch a tent or stay overnight here. For example a viewpoint, a café, a town, a picnic spot with no overnight stays.
- The place is in an area where camping is prohibited (reserve, protected or closed area). If a ban is known, we don't publish the place, even if people camp there.
- The place is on private land. Gardens, farms, fenced plots, the grounds of camps and businesses — unless the owner clearly allows everyone.
- The place is unsafe for camping. For example a riverbed that floods, scree, an avalanche slope, the edge of a cliff.
- The pin is not where the place is, or is too imprecise. Put the pin where the tents stand.
- Not enough information to check the place. Say what kind of place it is and how to get there.
- The description contains someone's personal data. Names, phone numbers, number plates, people's addresses — even the landowner's.
- The description breaks the rules (abuse, advertising). Links, contacts, ads for camps and services, swearing and abuse.
- Another reason — see the moderator's comment. The moderator explains it in a comment in "My places".
Photos
- The photo is not of this place.
- The place is hard to see. Too dark, blurred, or only the inside of a tent.
- People or licence plates are visible in the photo. Take the photo so that people and plates can't be seen.
- The photo breaks the rules.
- Looks like someone else's photo. Upload only your own photos.
- Another reason — see the moderator's comment.
"I was here" reports
Reports are published right away. A moderator removes a report that contains spam, someone's personal data or abuse. Report only places where you have been yourself, with the real date.
What TentOwl does not check
A moderator's approval means the place looks real and is described by the rules. It does not mean the place is safe or that camping there is allowed. Check the local rules yourself.
If you disagree with a decision
Write to us and give the place's name. A moderator will take another look.
Report a problem
If a published place is dangerous, closed, on private land, or contains someone's personal data, tap "Report a problem" in the place card. A report does not hide the place by itself: a moderator reviews it. Knowingly false and mass reports are not allowed.
