How it works
TentOwl is a free map of places to pitch a tent for the night. The places are added by travellers themselves. Next to each point the map shows how many people have confirmed the place and how recently.
TentOwl does not promise that a place is good, safe, or that camping there is allowed. It shows how much evidence there is that travellers have recently found the place as described.
What a point on the map means
Colour — how many people have confirmed the place.
- Green — "Verified by the community": at least three different people have confirmed the place, and nearly all their reports agree.
- Yellow — "Nearly verified": at least two people have confirmed it and agree, but there are still few confirmations or they are old.
- Grey — "Few confirmations": one confirmation or none, or the reports contradict each other.
Confirmations lose weight over time: a report from three months ago counts half as much as a fresh one. So a green point with no new reports turns yellow after a few months, and then grey.
Brightness — how long ago the place was confirmed. A bright point was confirmed recently. The longer nobody reports, the paler it gets. The palest points were last confirmed more than a year ago, or never.
A pale point with a light outline is a place you added that a moderator is still checking. Only you see it.
What a point does not mean
- A fresh report is not yet trust. One recent report is one person's opinion.
- "Verified" does not mean "safe". Weather, water, forest and people change quickly.
- "Verified" does not mean "allowed". TentOwl does not check whether camping is legal. Check the rules of reserves, private land and local bans yourself before you go.
- No point does not mean no place. The map is only starting to fill up.
How to add a place
- Tap "Add a place" and put a pin on the map — you can drag it.
- Give it a name, the type of place, how to get there, how many tents fit and what is nearby.
- Send it. The place appears on the map after a moderator checks it. Until then only you see it. The status and the decision are in "My places".
You don't have to sign in. To add photos, sign in with Google or Yandex. Before sending, have a look at the community rules — they say what we publish and why we may decline.
How to report that you were there
Open the point and tap "I was here". Say when you were there and answer a few questions: is the place still there, is there water, how is the access. Your report counts towards the point's colour and brightness right away. No sign-in needed.
If a place is dangerous, closed, or its description contains someone's personal data, tap "Report a problem" in the place card.
Free
The map, filters, place cards, trust signals, reports, adding places and photos, and links to places are free and will stay free. Money never affects a point's colour or the trust in a place.
Where the data comes from
Places, reports and photos come from TentOwl contributors. The base map and terrain come from open sources, listed on the "Data sources" page.
